February 16, 2014: Shapes and the Move Point Tool

February 16, 2014: Shapes and the Move Point Tool

Overview:  Making shapes with the move point tool.

If you want more instructions for the move point tool, do a search on my blog.  Klo has a lot of good classes about the move point tool, the more you use it, the easier it gets.  I found with repetition you can learn a lot and you remember all the tools on the menu bar too.

The chevron pattern is very popular right now and I wanted to put it in letters, but could not for the life of me figure out how to do it, so I asked Klo on the Pazzles Fan Facebook Group.  Fortunately, class is today so she showed how to do this.  It was easy and fun to do!
  1. Select a letter and font.  (Most fonts should works, thin ones may not, unless you make then thicker).
  2. Go to Text, convert to path, Alt D (duplicate).
  3. Go to the outline tool and add an outline, any size and color, set this aside.
  4. To create a chevron pattern, draw a line, go the the Tools on your color palette, select scissors, then the zigzag, (your could use any scissors pattern you wanted) adjust the way you want it to look.
  5. Thicken the line on the color palette, again anyway you want it to look.

1

  1. Make sure the chevron pattern is on top of your letter, so to the menu bar and select the 3rd icon from the right.
  2. Change the color of your chevron to white, (fill and pen).
  3. Select the chevron line, then right click, go to multiply, select the spacing and click the down arrow, make sure the chevron covers your letter.

2

  1. Select both the letter and chevron, then go to WYSIWYG, (I did mine on medium).

3

  1. Change the color of the chevron, and place over your duplicate.  You can then do WYSIWYG or leave it as is.
4
  1. You could also use different shapes, the technique would be the same.

Sunday afternoon class is about 1 hour 12 minutes.

If you need ideas for monograms search google for monogram pictures or check out Pinterest.

  1. Go to Type, select Zallman caps, select a mongram.
  2. Go to Text, convert to path.
  3. Clean up any weird pieces, you don’t have to be too fussy because it’s for vinyl. (These fonts were made to be printed, not cut, so it’s a good way to learn how to use the move point tool).

Also go to Shape, advanced path options, simplify path or Alt P.

For further instructions on the move point tool see class Manipulation Tool Bar/Cleaning it all Up.

To make the nodes or construction points larger go to  Settings, Setup, Tolerance, change the number.

When you fill this, it’ll look like you goofed, don’t worry you didn’t, go to Shape, transparent group or select the lock button on the bottom left of your screen.

Save your work.

  1. Go to Draw, make a rectangle about 1 1/2″ high by width of font.
  2. Place in the middle, or where ever you want it.
  3. Fill with white, line color white.
  4. Go to Draw, make another rectangle, fill with black, make a little black strip and place at the top of the white rectangle.
  5. Duplicate, (Alt D), the thin black strip and move down to the bottom of the white strip.
  6. Save this file under a different name to use for future use.
  7. Go to Type, select a font and type a name and place in the white strip.
  8. Select the name and the rectangles and center.
  9. Select all, (Ctrl A), select WUSIWUG, select high.
  10. Unfill, then fill.  Ohh pretty.
  11. Go to Tools, sort inline before outline.

If you want both files one with and one without the names re-save your file with a different name.

Now cut out your letter in vinyl any size depends what you want it for.

Go to Cut project, select weeding to save vinyl.  (This will put a box around your project).

Klo is doing hers 12″ x 12″ and will put it on a tile for a gift.  Use clear transfer tape to place on your tile. Great idea!

If you’re doing this for something that will be outside or has to be washed, make sure you use outside vinyl.

Put on a glass frame and change the paper in the back for different seasons.  Another great idea Klo.

This class is about 1 hour 45 minutes.

*What I did…

I finally got my Pazzles back from being fixed, (it had lost a screw) and I really want to do this!  Not sure when since I have a lot of things to cut out.
